START YOUR CAREER TODAY

If you enjoy working with your hands, have above average mechanical and math skills, understand spatial relationships and like solving problems, then sheet metal is the right trade for you! Being a sheet metal worker offers diverse work opportunities in many areas including but not limited to heating, ventilating, air-conditioning, roofing, restaurant, air pollution, marine installations and hospital equipment fields. There are a wide range of employers wanting to hire today and help you build a rewarding career as a sheet metal worker.

In order to network with our expansive contractor database, interested candidates must complete an application to the Sheet Metal Industry Training Board (SMITB), on behalf of the Sheet Metal Air, Rail and Transportation Workers (SMART) Local Union #280 and the British Columbia Sheet Metal Association (SMACNA-BC) contractors. Our SMART Local Union #280 members enjoy better wages, better benefits, increased job security and technical training at the Sheet Metal Workers Training Centre Society.

Once an application has been submitted, the SMITB Training Coordinator will evaluate it and determine your best career path options. Most applicants become pre-apprentices (pre-apps) working for SMACNA-BC contractors and become members of the SMART Local Union #280. Our contractors will hire you, then after a period of time working on the job, you become a registered apprentice and will be released to complete apprenticeship training at our Sheet Metal Workers Training Centre Society. Throughout your apprenticeship, you get to earn a good salary while learning your trade!

My employer thought it would be a good idea for me to receive an apprenticeship education at the Training Centre. There is always something new to work on. Lots of new skills. I loved it!

— Apprentice of Tri-Metal

We saw in Adam a good value for training, so we suggested him to pick up an apprenticeship program at the Training Centre.

— Joe Toso, president of Tri-Metal

The relationship between the Training Centre and the industry is important because the centre addresses the needs of the industry by providing a quality training.

— Joe Toso, president of Tri-Metal

When I was in high school, trades facilities weren’t as bright and clean as this one. Today, all those involved in trades have the opportunity to be ambassadors for younger people as they figure things out.

— Kevin Evans, former CEO of the ITA
