To start as a sheet metal pre-apprentice, applicants must write the Sheet Metal Evaluation Exam at our Training Centre or at SMART Local Union #280.

Call to make an appointment to write the evaluation exam:

Call the Sheet Metal Workers Training Centre (604-882-7680 Ext.101 ) to make an appointment to write the evaluation exam. The exam can be written: Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 9:00 am, 12:00 pm or 1:30 pm at the Sheet Metal Workers Training Centre (19077-95A Ave, Surrey).

There is also an option to do the exam and fill out forms at SMART Local Union #280 (6188 Kingsway, Burnaby V5J 1H5) if this is more convenient. Please call SMART Local Union #280 (604-430-3388) to arrange a date and time.

Note that the exam takes two hours and covers Math and English Comprehension.

The exam is for evaluation purposes only and is used to determine if a pre-apprentice will need math upgrading when he/she is later converted to a registered apprentice. No pass/fail.

After the evaluation exam:

After the exam, applicants will receive a list of potential employers.

Applicants will be asked to update their resumes, and actively target employers about current employment as a sheet metal pre-apprentice.

When applicants find a job, know their start date and notify the Training Centre about their employment, they will be directed to sign up as a member and will go on the pre-apprentice list at SMART Local Union #280

When applicants have made their attempts at finding work and did not succeed, they shall contact SMART Local Union #280 at 604-430-3388 for further direction. *Please note that applicants should not sign up as a member until they have a job and know their start date.
