Sheet Metal Industry Training Board
“we give you the tools to be successful in industry”
Sheet Metal Industry Training Board (SMITB) was created by SMART Local Union #280 & SMACNA-BC contractors to administer the organized sheet metal industry apprenticeship system for BC (excluding Vancouver Island). SMITB is the multi-employer sponsor for sheet metal apprentices and architectural sheet metal apprentices attending subsidized technical training at the Sheet Metal Workers Training Centre (SMWTCS). As members of SMART Local Union #280, apprentices are referred to work with SMACNA-BC contractors, and SMITB maintains the apprentice records and submits work-based training records to the Industry Training Authority (ITA).
SMITB operates on a “not-for-profit” basis and is currently comprised of 8 trustees (4 SMART Local Union #280 representatives and 4 SMACNA-BC contractors). Trustees are responsible for providing leadership in understanding the labour market needs and communicating information to over 1,600 SMART Local Union #280 members and over 70 SMACNA-BC contractors. SMITB has representation on various government committees to communicate the needs of the sheet metal industry. It is funded by hourly contributions negotiated through SMART Local Union #280 Collective Agreement.
